Description : The Bhimbetka rock shelters compose an archaeological site located in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. The shelters exhibit the earliest traces of human life in India. The Rock Shelters of Bhimbetka are situated in the foothills of the Vindhya mountain ranges. It is about 45 km south east of Bhopal.
Spreaded over 10 km this place has around 700 rock shelters. Bhimbetka is the very place where earliest known traces of human life in India were discovered. Within the massive sandstone outcrops lies five clusters of natural rock shelters, displaying paintings dating back to some 9000 years and are worlds oldest. In the rock paintings, you can see the cultural traditions of the inhabitants of 21 villages adjacent to the site. |
